THE FIRST CROSSFIT
STANDARD OF FITNESS

There are ten recognised general physical skills. They are cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, speed, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.

You are as fit as you are competent in each of these ten skills. A regimen develops fitness to the extent that it improves each of these ten skills.
Importantly, improvements in endurance, stamina, strength, and flexibility come about through training.

THE SECOND CROSSFIT
STANDARD OF FITNESS

The essence of this model is the view that fitness is about performing well at any and every task imaginable. This model suggests that your fitness can be measured by your capacity to perform well at these tasks in relation to other individuals.

The implication here is that fitness requires an ability to perform well at all tasks, even unfamiliar tasks, tasks combined in infinitely varying combinations. In practice this encourages the athlete to disinvest in any set notions of sets, rest periods, reps, exercises, order of exercises, routines, periodization, etc.

THE THIRD CROSSFIT
STANDARD OF FITNESS

There are three metabolic pathways that provide the energy for all human action.

Total fitness, the fitness that CrossFit promotes and develops, requires competency and training in each of these three pathways or engines.

Balancing the effects of these three pathways largely determines the how and why of the metabolic conditioning or “cardio” that we do at CrossFit.

Favoring one or two to the exclusion of the others and not recognising the impact of excessive training in the oxidative pathway are arguably the two most common faults in fitness training.

Six weeks of CrossFit at Clifton Hill
We are now taking bookings for our next six week intensive CrossFit course to be held in Clifton Hill. The course includes training on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It will give you a solid introduction to CrossFit movements and you will participate in some challenging and rewarding workouts.

Excuses, excuses
I don't feel well today.
I have no energy.
It's too cold.
It's too hot.
I'm tired after work.
I just ate.
My legs hurt.
My arms hurt.
I worked out yesterday.
I hate running.
The gym's too far away.
I'm not motivated.
I'm not getting results.
I don't feel strong today.
My favourite gym t-shirt is in the washing.
I just don't fell like it.


You can come up with any number of excuses and reasons not to train.
But there only needs to be one reason to train...because you can!
Now, get up and do something for yourself.

Get involved
The greatest thing about CrossFit (well, in my opinion anyway) is the sense of community. We're all about helping each other improves and grow. There are no battles of ego (the WODs wipe that away pretty quickly) and there's no "get fit quick" BS. It's an open-source model meaning you can take what is suitable and modify it for your own benefit. Whilst, it's not one-size-fits-all it can definitely benefit all.

Lots of people exercise with CrossFit by themselves in gyms, parks and at home. This is one of the coolest things about CrossFit - you don't have to sign up anywhere to train.

If you are one of those people who is hiding at home and doing it by yourself it's time to get in touch. Start to leave some comments on our blog or with our daily workouts; join the discussion community; or come along to a class. We're even here to coach you one-on-one or in small groups with your friends.

Don't stay a stranger.

Virtuosity or mediocrity?
Virtuosity can be defined as "a focus on exceptional technical display" or "technical skill or fluency or style". We've all seen virtuosity on the sports field, on the stage and even, perhaps, in our friends and colleagues. We hold such displays to be exceptions rather than the rule.

Some might think that aiming for perfection is a fool's quest; I think it is an admirable goal. Shouldn't we be aiming to do our best all the time?



In the gym, do you let yourself exercise with poor posture or a lack of focus? Would you be surprised to hear that your results would dramatically improve were you to just put in that little bit more effort?

When you are hungry, do you just grab something that's easy rather than preparing something healthy? Would the extra effort be worth it?

What I am trying to illustrate is that settling for the average is not the path to success. Ask any successful business person or sportsperson; they worked for what they got and they didn't settle for anything less than the best.

Your continued health & fitness requires effort on your behalf. It requires diligence, commonsense and consistency. It demands more than just the mediocre. If your want to be fit - truly fit - you have to aim for virtuosity.

Get into the Zone
Nutrition is a key component of your overall health & fitness regimen. Without a proper diet you will never reach your full potential. Sure, you'll still improve just doing the WODs but you won't reach the stars like some dedicated CrossFitters (including Nicole from CF Santa Cruz).



We have found that the Zone Diet as introduced by Dr Barry Sears in his book Enter the Zone produces the most remarkable results. It drops body fat and builds muscle...fast. Many people decide not to try this method of eating because at the initial stages it requires some strict measuring of food and some attention to detail. These people will never find out if the Zone will make a difference or not.

Here's our challenge to you:
  • buy Enter the Zone to get all the background info or simply search the web
  • try the Zone Diet for two weeks (no cheating!)
  • decide if it's worth the effort

CrossFit in the news again
STLToday.com, the home of the St Louis Dispatch, recently posted an article detailing a reporter's initial experience with CrossFit training. The article begins:

"It was an ugly moment in my personal fitness annals.

The CrossFit class at Sweat Gym in Clayton had just ended, and I was feeling as if I might toss my cookies.

Or pass out.

Every muscle was shaking, and I was sure my legs would buckle on the way to the car. For the next week, I was unable to walk, run, sit or stoop without deep, deep tissue pain. Rolling over in bed hurt."

We're ba-ack!
Okay, so after about 26 hours of travel we made it home from the USA. The trip home included a drive from Santa Cruz to San Francisco, then a plane ride to LAX and then another plane ride home to sunny Melbourne.

We've taken heaps of photos, met heaps of great people and have lots to tell. I'll be writing a long blog entry - or perhaps a separate article - just as soon as this jetlag wears off.

PS - I just had the best coffee I've had in 4 weeks and it was from the airport. Thank God we're home. :o)

Santa Cruz is cool
Hi all,

Santa Cruz is a whole lot like Byron Bay. Relaxed, friendly and just a little kooky. We love it. We arrived here yesterday after a 2(ish) hour drive south from San Francisco. After checking into a homely motel called Sunny Cove I headed off to CrossFit Santa Cruz for a workout. Tough work after a day of faffing around, driving and not eating enough. The workout was great:

25-20-15-10:
  • deadlifts (I did 135lb)
  • kettlebell swings (20kg)
  • box jumps (the big one)
  • back squat jumps (dowel)
  • 200m run
My time was average at a little over 25 minutes. I am feeling it today. I recommend trying the workout sometime yourself.



Everyone that we have met that is associated with CrossFit has been amazing. This is truly a community and one more thing that sets CrossFit apart from other fitness models.

We're heading back for a WOD tonight at 6pm then Greg A. is taking us out somewhere for dinner. You gotta see this dude workout in person...it's awesome. Oh yeah, he's a nice guy too. :o)

Peter, I have a wicked t-shirt for you.
Fiona, there are no beanies here at Santa Cruz...sorry.

I've forgotten my discussion board password so please forgive my lack of involvement (I have been reading but not posting).

We're home on September 8. I hope you are all well and keeping fit. I have a million new ideas and you will all be feeling the pinch with me very soon.

Up at the crack of dawn.
Congratulations to the hardy souls who started the 6 week intensive this morning. It takes real commitment to wake up so early and venture into something new. You can be proud that you have taken the step!
I am looking forward to working with this group over the coming weeks and I will periodically give you, the reader, a rundown of how it is all progressing.
