THE FIRST CROSSFIT
STANDARD OF FITNESS

There are ten recognised general physical skills. They are cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, speed, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.

You are as fit as you are competent in each of these ten skills. A regimen develops fitness to the extent that it improves each of these ten skills.
Importantly, improvements in endurance, stamina, strength, and flexibility come about through training.

THE SECOND CROSSFIT
STANDARD OF FITNESS

The essence of this model is the view that fitness is about performing well at any and every task imaginable. This model suggests that your fitness can be measured by your capacity to perform well at these tasks in relation to other individuals.

The implication here is that fitness requires an ability to perform well at all tasks, even unfamiliar tasks, tasks combined in infinitely varying combinations. In practice this encourages the athlete to disinvest in any set notions of sets, rest periods, reps, exercises, order of exercises, routines, periodization, etc.

THE THIRD CROSSFIT
STANDARD OF FITNESS

There are three metabolic pathways that provide the energy for all human action.

Total fitness, the fitness that CrossFit promotes and develops, requires competency and training in each of these three pathways or engines.

Balancing the effects of these three pathways largely determines the how and why of the metabolic conditioning or “cardio” that we do at CrossFit.

Favoring one or two to the exclusion of the others and not recognising the impact of excessive training in the oxidative pathway are arguably the two most common faults in fitness training.

Rained out
Today was a good test for the new wet weather policy. By 8:45am it was bucketing down. Our most dedicated athlete, Aaron, was the only person to show up so we treated him to breakfast in place of a workout.
New wet weather policy for Sunday training
Over the past three weeks there has been a lot of precipitation of a Sunday morning. This has caused much confusion regarding whether Sunday training would be held or not. So, we've decided to create a standard policy.

If it is raining at 8:30am (or when you leave home if it's earlier) then please call Adam directly on 0419 359 484 to confirm if training is proceeding.

Squats: avoid them at your peril
The St. Kilda Football Club recently learned something very valuable. They learned that not including the humble squat in their strength and conditioning program was a very silly decision. It seems that The Saints have been neglecting the vital exercise for quite sometime. Can anything good come of this? It seems not.

The team has been plagued by a raft of hamstring injuries over the past few seasons. Until recently no-one could work out why. Finally, they discovered that the team has been avoiding the squat. Why any professional team would do this is beyond our understanding. It just proves that even "professional" strength & conditioning coaches can get it wrong.

We can guarantee that no-one at St. Kilda would have been avoiding squats if we were in charge.

Fighter training
We are in the process of developing fitness training tailored to the needs of fighters. It's the CrossFit model with a few fight-specific tweaks. We see that some fighters are still missing the point when it comes to their fitness training and fight preparation. For example, the standard fitness training of a fighter consists of a body-building resistance routine and medium distance running. This does not train for the physical demands of a fight (not to mention the mental aspect). A fight is predominantly a powerful, anaerobic event requiring immense power endurance. CrossFit is the perfect model for developing such fitness.

If you are a fighter and you want an edge on your opponents, contact us to discuss how we can help. This is an area of athletic development that we are very passionate about and we won't allow you to come up short in the ring.

Train wherever you can
"We believe that where you train is less important than how you train and that who you train with matters more than what gear you have." - Coach Glassman

You can train just about anywhere. All you need is a little improvisation and you're away. To prove the point, here is a video of Adam training out the back of his house.

New videos
Peter and I had some time this morning after the group intensive to shoot some video footage. We were fooling around with an Olympic bar and plates totalling 40kg (a good weight for some light practice).

The videos have been uploaded to the media library. Please leave your comments to tell us what you think.

We will be shooting some more stuff soon. If you have any requests, post them to comments.

Train like the Iceman
Chuck Liddell is one mean mixed martial arts fighter. At 37 years of age he is also one of the fittest athletes on the planet. How does he maintain such a high level of fitness? He trains with John Hackleman at The Pit (a CrossFit affiliate in the USA).

Read this online article from Sports Illustrated that tells you more about Liddell's training regime.

The CrossFit Journal
We often get a lot of questions about what people should read regarding health & fitness. The big problem here is that there is a lot of garbage out there. Also, there's a lot of politics too. So, it's hard to know what's worth your time and money.

We have read so many books, magazines and journals over the years that we think we sit in a fair place to make recommendations regarding health & fitness material.

We are yet to find a better publication than the CrossFit Journal. It's a no BS manual that teaches you how to achieve real fitness and lasting health. It's published monthly. If you only read one thing this year, make this journal it!

Leave your comments
You can now leave your comments on our posts without needing to be a Google member.

So, what are you waiting for?
We're back

Think quality not quantity this Easter
It's no secret that almost everyone will indulge in chocolate over the coming days and weeks. Truth be told, we're partial to a bit of chocolate now and then ourselves.

This Easter we recommend that you think of quality not quantity. You will do well to eat less chocloate than previous years. How about buying yourself something a bit more exclusive this year? Perhaps ask for something you will really savour rather than a pile of chocolate eggs. In the end it will cost the same to buy less of something special as it will to buy more of something average. And you won't have to be too worried about eating too much sugar.

Happy Easter!
Easter Break
Please note: there is no Sunday training this week & there is no intensive training in Clifton Hill on Friday (this week) and Monday (next week).

We're back on deck on Tuesday, April 10th. See you all then!
