Are you committed????

Maybe this is a reality check for us all.

Yesterday Matt Swift from CrossFit Brisbane decided to scale our Throwdown WOD 30BW Clean and Jerks. However, rather than scale down, he scaled up. He did 30 SQUAT CLEAN & JERKS @ 80kg (his BW) in 7:17!!!

Perhaps, rather than bemoaning the fact that we might not be able to currently complete the WOD as Rx’d, we can draw some inspiration from the fact that there is a 40yr old man who is able to scale the WOD up and still complete it in a phenomenal time.

The question that we must all ask ourselves is what are we willing to do to get to that level. Are we really training properly? Is crossFit just something that we do a couple of times a week and think we are working hard? How commited are we?

CrossFit Victoria’s new programming starts tomorrow. The program is designed for people who follow the 3-on 1-off cycle. If you want to get the maximium benefit from this programming you will need to follow it as prescribed.

I know people are busy and sometimes life gets in the road. I have a new baby, work a full time day job, work at CrossFit Victoria and travel and work for CrossFit HQ. I know how hard it is to follow the program. But I am going to make a commitment to follow it as closely as possible. I am going to make sacrifices to ensure that I can reach my potential. I am going to post in my workout journal so that I can be held accountable for my performances. And then maybe when I am forty years old, I will be squat clean and jerking my body weight in a faster time than Matt.

My question to you all is:

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

Are you going to commit wholeheartedly or are you just going to dip your toes in and then complain that you are not strong enough, fast enough or powerful enough.

Well, what are you going to do?

Yep, your right…point taken.

Great post Zane!

I’ve become more committed to my training recently starting by religiously following the main site 3on1 off since early September.  Tomorrow will be the start of my 10th straight cycle without missing a wod.

There’s been some great wods, (PB’s in Angie, Helen and 30 Muscleups) and some really terrible ones like a Fran blow out and loss of strength in some lifts.  However I’ve stuck to it because I know that the results will come, it requires effort and time.

If you are truly committed it needs to become a priority, there are always hurdles for all of us to overcome but if it’s important to you you will find a way.  This weekend I’m off to a small country town and my big priority has been finding out what the gym is like so I can stick to the 3 on 1 off cycle.

One thing I’d like to say is the attitudes in the gym when you are all training hard is amazing.  The support you give each other and the individual determination I see inspires me to train harder.  The Crossfit Total at the 6am class on Wednesday was a great example.  There were pb’s everywhere and a great “vibe” in the gym, well done to everyone.

Keep working hard and focus on more regular attendance and the results will come.

Guilty as charged. I love Crossfit… when I go. I reckon I average once a week which is lame. However I have only ever expected results consistent with the work I put in and I have never been disappointed. And as the sign promised me when I joined I am fitter than I have ever been. Like Zane I have commitments, I juggle a new baby, a fulltime job, a masters degree and a relationship but I offer no excuses except laziness and a fear of success! 3 days on 1 off is a great long term goal for me but for me just making it three days in a week would be great. That is my commitment for the rest of the year. I’ll restart my diary in the forum to keep me honest. Thanks Zane. K

Good point there. I am really looking forward to the new programming. I’m committed to follow it as closely as my home gym equipment allows. Should be awesome!

Zane,

I just wanted to thank you for your post. My reply was short, but the impact was big. I was suppossed to do deadlifts tonight but after reading your post and then your log about your mighty fine attempt I decided to bite the bullet and give it a crack.

30 x BW C&J (BW 68kg) scaled to 60kg (roughly 90%)

Time 13.48

My effort completly took me surprise. I really didn’t think I was capable of that weight or that time. I even said in my reply to Scott when the workouts were posted that I will never achieve 30 BW C&J in my lifetime. Not only is it realistic but will now be a goal.

Thanks for inspiring me and making me realise that I am capable of more than I thought.

Aaron,

I think you may surprise yourself more often in the coming months. You have more CrossFit experience than any of us. Your body is more conditioned than you realise. Attack the WODS with the same intensity you did tonight and you will be reaping the rewards.

Great work tonight. I think 30 X 70kg is just around the corner for you.

Well Done!

Great post Zane.

The times when I walk away from a session feeling great is when I know I gave it my best and really pushed hard. When I went for the 24kg kettle-bell instead of the 20kg. When I chose to dead-lift that extra 5 or 10kg in a WOD, even though I knew I would be hurting for the duration. When I decided to stay on that pull-up bar and not break my sets up.

On commitment. On those cold mornings or tiresome afternoons when I’m feeling less enthusiastic about going to a CF class I just remind myself.

“If you have to work a shift at your hospitality job. You’d front. So if you don’t go to this class because you can’t be bothered. Then really what you are saying is that you value pulling pots of beer and taking guff from customers more than your personal development.”

I think I know what I’m going to do.
See you tomorrow, bright and early.

Looks like Zane has given a few of you (us) a kick in the pants. I’m glad. You all do so well when you switch on. What we trainers want to see - in ourselves as well - is that the switch is always on.

We can all go into detail about how hard it is to train. Personally, I’m fighting bloody frustrating injuries but this weekend I’m going to program a series of training up to my operation so I’m as strong as I can be. I have NO EXCUSES!

Let’s all commit to doing better.
Let’s keep our journals up to date.
Let’s interact more (in person and online).

Together we will become stronger, fitter, better.

Thank you!
