DO I HAVE TO BE FIT TO START CROSSFIT?

By Scott Waugh | In Blog Articles | on August 24, 2016

Um, nope.

Relax dude, I can see your brow is getting all frowney.
You don’t need to be fit or strong or anything else for that matter.  Because you friend, are just like beer.
Now I see your surprised, “what you talkin ‘bout Willis?” face appearing.
You see Beer starts off as raw ingredients, none of which look anything like beer.  These ingredients then undergo a process. That process is done in a very specific order, in specific measures, so brewers can be assured of certain things happening, and a refreshing, tasty end product.
Now while we can’t guarantee that you will end up refreshing and tasty, you too are basically starting out raw. The same as many of the 20 year olds who now throw tin around with us, the same as the sixty somethings that came in not thinking they couldn’t ‘do the stuff’.
They can now throw around the tin, and do the stuff, because we put them through a process.  Nope, we don’t just expect you to come in and be able to do everything straight away, and the thing is, you don’t need to!
We’ve been around for quite a while now, so we know everyone is starting off having different measures of their own raw ingredients. Some may be more mobile than others, you may be a gun at the steady – state cardio stuff but not have a strength base, whereas Jeremy who walked in after you is the complete opposite . . . but with CrossFit whatever your individual ingredient ‘mix’ is, in the beginning, the process is the same.
The process starts with you going through a Course that is designed for those new to the game. This teaches you the basic CrossFit movements. These are movements that are utilised frequently in our classes, or that give you a base for the more technical elements we introduce later. At this stage we also employ a full Movement Screening Process to ensure you are moving safely. These two things give you confidence that you can move into our main classes knowing you will get a quality workout.
During this Foundational process we will also have gotten to know you quite a bit. Your strengths, your weaknesses, the movements you have trouble ‘connecting’ with, and we make sure to accommodate these things in class.
All our workouts are scaleable. This means we can drop the weight a little to ensure proper form, we can dial back the volume we get you to do so it doesn’t turn into an ‘all guns blazing’ then bust scenario, and we can pear back the exercise to part movements or swap movements for something less complicated, as and when required.
We do this all the time, even for people who have been with us for a while. It is a coaches job to firstly keep you safe, secondly to ensure good movement and lastly to help you move outside of your comfort zone. It is why we have coaches there every class. It is why we put a lot of emphasis on our Coaches Development. It is what will keep you moving well and get you moving strongly.
So if I was going to summarise (surprise – I am now going to) . . .
You start out as basic ingredients, our coaches are the brewers and our programme is the process . . .

and put together in the right order, with just the right mixing, and your basic ingredients turn into . . .

Well, something pretty damn awesome!
